The eBike Battery: Longevity, Handling, and Storage

Can I ride my eBike in winter, even in freezing temperatures? When and where should I charge my battery? Where should I store my battery when I’m not using it? In this article, we’ll answer these and other common questions.

Riding and Charging in Winter

Is it bad for my eBike battery to ride in sub-zero temperatures during winter?

No! However, it’s important to know that a cold battery can suffer significant performance and range loss, as colder temperatures increase electrical resistance. When riding in wintry conditions (even at single-digit temperatures), it’s crucial to begin your ride with a battery that’s as close to room temperature as possible. So, whether you're on the trail with an electric full-suspension or hardtail, expect different performance in winter and plan your bike tours accordingly.

Tip: When riding in freezing conditions, use higher assist levels. Ironically, this can extend your range because both the battery and motor will reach higher operating temperatures, preventing the battery cells from freezing and allowing them to perform more efficiently.

Storing the eBike Battery

In general, it’s important to follow the recommended temperature ranges when using and charging your eBike battery. These recommendations are usually found on the battery itself or in the user manual for built-in batteries. During the summer months, your bike and battery can safely be stored in a shed or garage. However, once temperatures drop, it’s best to bring them indoors.

Things to consider when storing your battery:

  • Store in a cool, dry place, ideally between 10°C and 20°C.
  • Only charge the battery once it has reached room temperature.
  • Avoid deep discharge: Before storing, charge the battery to about 30-60% capacity. This charge level is ideal for long-term storage and prevents overcharging or deep discharge.
  • Don’t leave the battery connected to the charger for extended periods.
  • Keep the battery clean and remove any dirt or salt buildup.

In winter, simply bring your battery indoors. If it’s built-in, you can bring the entire bike inside, whether in your living room or basement.

How to handle the e Bike Battery

Use the key to unlock the battery from its mount. Be careful here to avoid scratching the frame.

Carefully remove the battery from the e-bike frame.

Now you can charge the e-bike battery—ideally, wait until it has warmed up to room temperature.

FAQ e Bike Battery:

Can I leave my eBike batter on the bike while cleaning it?

No. The eBike battery should be removed before cleaning with a garden hose to protect it from excessive water exposure. However, a light rain shower won’t harm your eBike battery.
